An ode upon dedicating to Shakespeare, a new building at Stratford upon Avon [manuscript], [1769].

Poem with autograph revisions by David Garrick. 3 copies with autograph revisions. Some revisions in W.a.161 appear to be in William Smith's hand. Includes 7 airs beginning, Sweetest bard that ever sung; When nature smiling (or, bounteous) hail'd his birth; To crimes from death and torture fly; Wild frantic with pleasure (or, Wit mirth love and pleasure); A world where all pleasures abound; Thou soft flowing Avon by thy silver stream; More gentle than the southern gale [Knapp 105]. Also contains after the ode, a peroration including an Address to the ladies, beginning, In these strong times of party and division [Knapp 2]. Many passages have been deleted in pencil.
